What is a dedication ceremony?

In the context of the military.

Is it like a formal occasion where military personnel are back from combat, and some of them are honored for their brave deeds?

I encountered this phrase in a book. The context mentioned that soldiers were given purple heart pins. Which I think is what they do in the US, but I imagine it's fairly similar here.

Thanks.

We usually have medal parades, either in theatre or on return to Canada where personnel that were eligible for a theatre medal are presented the medal. Other medals such as the Medal of Bravery are usually awarded at a later date and most often the member is sent to Ottawa to receive it.

I see. So, does this mean that "dedication ceremony" is an American usage?

In the sense of medals, I guess so?

If someone just said “dedication ceremony” to me, I would have assumed dedicating a monument or something.
