    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

Re: FJAG's last post above: Sounds about right in reference to the attitude I have noted before.

Considering its only been a few years since the Reg Force took the MCDV's over, I don't see how "plenty" can be that many. Nevertheless, if that is the case, have you ever wondered why that is that "plenty" of them didn't make it to Co of frigates? Maybe its because their stint as MCDV CO's...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

It's not the missiles per se. Minor warship is defined by exclusions: If it has AAW weapons systems or is air capable (can carry a helo was the original intent, don't know where the RCN stands on unmanned air assets, except that some were tested and carried on the MCDV's and they remained...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

Two issues here: First, did anyone figure out what the purpose of these platforms would be, i.e. what defense need are they supposed to fulfil. And two, does anyone realize that these vessels would fall outside the definition of minor war vessels, and therefore would require a full surface...

    Replacing the Subs

If Canada joins, does it become CAUKUS?

Only on the sea side. The shore is beautiful. ;)

    Current Dress Regs

We all know that these are the Inuit Rangers only uniform. None other is provided them. However, they didn't wear old faded ones, or dirty boots or old caps: They are wearing clean crisp ones and clean black boots. That is not dishonoring the duty.

Couple thousand tons would be nice. Depending on the timing, you could recycle the HAL's main radars and some of its weapons systems (ESSM and 57 mm gun for instance). But personally, I can't see this ever taking happening. I think it's a ploy by the RCN to shut up some of the army critics that...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Not quite exact, Edward. The first two maritime services of Canada were the Harbours and Lighthouses Service and the Canadian Fisheries Service, both under the Minister of Marine. The former became the Coast Guard and the later was a heavily armed service at first (CGS Canada and two other such...

Yep. Don't know how many "scout and return" I've done on the east coast while on sovpats before the days of the recognized maritime picture (and pre internet/satcom days), but it was a lot of them. Anything we caught even at the edge of radar detection got "visited".

Justin Trudeau hints at boosting Canada’s military spending

Actually, they did ask exactly that question of their white shirted brethren: "What kind of boats are in this shot?" And they were told "Well, that's a RCN boat, why?" reply: "Just making sure it is". Being CA/RCAF, however, they didn't know to ask the obvious follow up question: And what kind...

    Replacing the Subs

Not in the 50's and 60's when they started by copying British cars.

Somehow, I see these two statements as contradictory, FJAG. If I went by the apparent logic of the second statement, I would think you would want an Army made up of MBT's only, because jeeps, G-Wagons, logistics trucks and Hummers are all not capable combat systems. Not every ship in the navy...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Don't worry, Colin. He is Army - he doesn't understand. He actually thinks of the defense of Canada in Army terms of people actually landing here in large numbers trying to invade the place. He doesn't get that one of the two largest countries in the world in terms of population (China) would...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

The Thaon di Revel just commissioned about two or three years ago. The Sparviero's commissioned between 1974 and 1984. We are not even talking about the same Oto Melara 76 mm gun. The one on the Knud Rasmussen, the Sparviero and also, BTW, the Iroquois, are a earlier and different variant...
