Mother of teenager killed by police hit by stray bullet at his funeral: report
The mother of a Black teenager who was gunned down by police in Florida earlier this month was reportedly hit by a bullet during her son’s burial this past week.
A spokesperson for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Tod Goodyear, told NBC News on Monday that the mother, Quasheda Pierce, 39, was shot in her leg during the service on Saturday.
The spokesperson said the agency’s investigation into the shooting, which he noted includes witness testimony and physical evidence, determined the shot “allegedly originated” from a 16-year-old who had “apparently experienced an accidental discharge from a firearm concealed on his person during the funeral service.”
Goodyear said the teenager, whose name has not been released, had also been injured Saturday, saying “the round penetrated and exited his leg prior to impacting Quasheda Pierce’s leg.”
He added that neither of the injuries appear to be life threatening.
